Chapter 370: The Voting Assembly
Mei Chuanqi was the first to lead the members of the Shadow Unit, saluting Mei Zhendong and the others. Only after Mei Zhendong and his group returned the salute did he walk forward with a smile. "Grandfather."
Mei Zhendong laughed heartily. "Good boy! In just a few short years, you've been promoted to Major General. Not bad, not bad at all."
Looking across the entire Mei family now, there was no one else so young who had been promoted to Major General through their own ability. It wasn't in vain that he had named him 'Chuanqi' (Legend) back then; fortunately, he had lived up to the name.
Mei Chuanqi just smiled.
"Work hard and give it an extra push. Surpass your father."
What Mei Zhendong was referring to was the patriarch, but other members of the Mei family looked towards Mei Zhengjun. Now, both father and son were Major Generals.
Mei Zhengjun stepped forward, raised his hand to straighten Mei Chuanqi's collar, and gave a slight smile. "This military uniform suits you well."
Then, he patted him on the shoulder. "Let's go in together."
"Alright."
As the officers of the Shadow Unit joined the Mei family's procession, they immediately felt their own rank level was different from the others, and a sense of unprecedented superiority even arose within them.
"Chuanqi, this is your first time participating in a meeting like this. There are probably many rules you don't understand. Let me tell you, after we enter the Great Hall, seats are arranged by officer rank. Generals sit with Generals, Lieutenant Generals with Lieutenant Generals. As a Major General, you'll sit with our Mei family's Major Generals."
As they walked, Mei Zhendong explained the meeting's precautions to Mei Chuanqi. Behind them, Wu Lang and the others also listened attentively to Mei Zhendong's instructions.
From beginning to end, Mei Chuanqi never heard Mei Zhendong mention Feng Jingteng, not even half a sentence.
However, he knew that the entire Mei family was now discussing Feng Jingteng's matter. After all, Feng Jingteng's uncle had become partners with a Major General from the Che family. Doing this was clearly intended to oppose their Mei family.
But the problem was, Feng Jingteng was his partner. The Mei family members all felt that he and Feng Jingteng were now highly unsuitable to be together.
Just as Mei Chuanqi and his group were walking through the entrance of the Great Hall, Mei Zhendong suddenly slowed his pace.
Wu Lang and the others looked up, puzzled. They saw a large contingent of people entering through the right-side door of the Great Hall. Their numbers were similar to the Mei family's, making it clear at a glance that this was another major aristocratic family.
"The Che family is here too," someone murmured quietly.
The meeting of the two great families was like two flames of different colors colliding fiercely. The atmosphere instantly reached a boiling point, allowing outsiders to clearly perceive the rivalry between the two families.
Mei Zhendong chuckled. "General Che, long time no see."
The head of the Che family returned the smile. "Senior Mei, you've been well, I hope."
The two families exchanged pleasantries with smiles that didn't reach their eyes. The people behind them stared at each other like natural enemies, their gazes sweeping across the opposing side.
Wu Lang and the others felt that the looks exchanged between the two families were more terrifying than ion cannons. When something was hit by an ion cannon, it still made an explosive sound, letting them know exactly where the explosion occurred. But this confrontation between the two families was like a war without gunpowder smoke, making people involuntarily break out in a cold sweat.
The two families, as if by silent agreement, each headed for different security checkpoints on the left and right. Only after confirming that no one was carrying weapons were they allowed to enter.
"Majors' seats are on floors 1 to 10. Lieutenant Colonels' seats are on floors 11 to 18. Colonels' seats are on floors 19 to 23. Senior Colonels' seats are on floors 24 to 27. Major Generals' seats are on the 28th floor. Lieutenant Generals' seats are on the 29th floor. Generals' seats are on the 30th floor. Majors on floors 1 to 10 must take the stairs. Officers of other ranks, please take the elevators designated for your specific rank, as indicated on the elevator signs." These words were spoken by Mei Zhendong. "For officers who haven't participated in the meeting before, try to find rooms with higher numbers to avoid accidentally sitting in someone else's seat."
He had already explained this once before they arrived, and repeating it now was solely for the benefit of the Shadow Unit members, to prevent them from taking the wrong elevator.
Mei Chuanqi was a Major General, so he wouldn't be going with Wu Lang and the others. He gave them a few instructions, telling them to find their seats, and then followed Mei Zhengjun and the others to take the elevator to the 27th floor.
Mei Zhengjun led Mei Chuanqi to the Mei family's designated room. Taking advantage of the moment when there were few people in the room, he asked, "Where is Lieutenant General Feng?"
Mei Chuanqi replied, "He has some matters to attend to and needs to arrive a bit later. Besides, it's not convenient for him to be seen walking with me right now."
"It truly is inconvenient for him to be seen with the Mei family at this moment." Mei Zhengjun guided Mei Chuanqi to sit in the most corner position.
Mei Chuanqi activated the optical brain prepared on the desktop and immediately saw a view of the various officers entering the Great Hall from outside.
Initially, large groups of officers were pouring into the Great Hall. As the meeting time approached, the flow of people dwindled, until finally, only a few scattered officers hurried in.
Just as the doors were about to close, Feng Jingteng leisurely walked into the Great Hall.
The moment Mei Chuanqi saw Feng Jingteng, his eyes lit up. He quickly switched the display to a view inside the Great Hall, watching Feng Jingteng pass through the security checkpoint and meet up with Gu Yuan.
Mei Zhengjun glanced at the figure on his optical brain screen and said calmly, "Every voting assembly brings its own unrest. You need to be careful."
Mei Chuanqi responded with a slight smile. "I know."
Feng Jingteng and Gu Yuan chatted for a while before Gu Yuan nodded in satisfaction and left.
Mei Chuanqi watched Feng Jingteng enter the elevator, then switched the display to the voting system.
Suddenly, Mei Zhengjun beside him sat up straight. "The assembly is about to begin."
Mei Chuanqi looked up at the large three-dimensional projection screen in front. Three figures appeared: Gu Yuan, Wang Yuan, and Mei Zhenqiu.
The three were seated on specially made ornate chairs. At the top of each chair's back was a digital screen, used to display the vote count.
Immediately after, their room suddenly transformed. The solid walls became transparent, as if they were sitting inside a glass room. They could see people in front, behind, left, right, above, and below. This was an open voting format, serving a supervisory role.
Furthermore, the Great Hall was constructed in a cylindrical structure with a hollow center. This arrangement allowed people in different rooms to clearly see the actions of those opposite them.
At that moment, a broadcast announcement rang out: "Thirty-five years have passed since the last selection of a Grand General. Today, we once again welcome a new voting assembly. The voting method remains the same as before: each person has only one voting opportunity. Voting will commence first with officers not stationed on our planet, then proceed sequentially by seat number, starting with the General in seat number one."
The voting process was strictly regulated: voting was only allowed when a seat's digital number lit up, and no two people could vote at the same time. This rule was put in place to prevent anyone from secretly tampering with the system.
The moment the vote button was pressed, the count on the digital screen on the back of the candidate's chair would increase accordingly. This allowed voters to know if they had voted for the correct person, thereby preventing anyone from secretly cheating.
"Let the voting assembly now begin."
As soon as the broadcast ended, a large video screen appeared before everyone.
The video showed several thousand officers of field-grade rank and above, all stationed on Diluoya Planet. Each of them was voting remotely via video.
"General Shen will begin the voting."
Remote voting was very simple. As soon as an officer had cast their vote, their video feed was immediately cut off. And so, the numbers on the digital screens behind the chairs of the three Grand General candidates began to change constantly.
Gu Yuan had the most votes, climbing steadily like an elevator. Wang Yuan had the fewest; among the several thousand officers, only just over a hundred had voted for him.
However, this was only the beginning. No one knew yet who would ultimately secure the position of Grand General.
When the remote voting concluded, Gu Yuan held a commanding lead. The majority of officers had voted for Gu Yuan.
Seeing the vote count, the corner of Gu Yuan's mouth curved upwards slightly.
"Next, the Generals in seat number one will begin voting."
The General-level voting began. As soon as the digital number on a seat's table lit up, that General could cast their vote. After voting, the number on the adjacent seat number two would light up, and so on.
There were a total of 8,960 Generals on Diluoya Planet. Among them, 4,997 Generals cast their votes for Mei Zhenqiu, 3,632 Generals voted for Gu Yuan, and the remaining few voted for Wang Yuan. This round significantly closed the gap between Mei Zhenqiu and Gu Yuan, while Wang Yuan was left far behind.
After the Generals finished voting, it was the turn of the Lieutenant Generals on the 29th floor. There were a total of 61,254 Lieutenant Generals. Their votes were almost entirely cast for Gu Yuan and Mei Zhenqiu. Wang Yuan's current total was a mere 2,098 votes, appearing pitiful compared to the other two. Sitting there, he seemed like a joke.
However, Wang Yuan appeared quite calm, as if his purpose there was merely to attend the meeting, not to participate in the Grand General candidacy assembly.
Mei Zhenqiu and Gu Yuan exchanged glances. Their current vote counts were quite close, but this was still just the beginning.
What truly made people nervous was still to come. The majors, being the largest group in number, held the key to the entire election.
